Kia Sportage 2023

Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage

The 2023 Kia Sportage stands out from the crowd of compact crossovers with its outgoing style. The Kia's unconventional face features an alien-looking set of headlights and a distinct grille design. Its bolder body is also dimensionally larger than before, resulting in more cargo space and a roomier interior. Inside, the new Sportage is both eye-catching and packed with technology including a massive dash-mounted display. Motivation comes from either a 187-hp four-cylinder or a 226-hp hybrid powertrain that both pair with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. With stiff competition from segment stalwarts such as the Mazda CX-5, as well as updated adversaries such as the new Honda CR-V, the 2023 Sportage will have to prove it has more to offer than just a wild exterior.

  • LX $26,000 (estimate).
  • X-Line, $29,000 (estimate).
  • EX, $30,000 (estimate).
  • SX, $34,000 (estimate).
  • X-Pro, $35,000 (estimate).
  • SX-Prestige $37,000 (estimate).
  • X-Pro Prestige, $38,000 (estimate).

The Sportage's default powertrain is a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder that mates to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid variant mixes a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a single electric motor that generates a total of 226 horsepower.

Engine with 226 horsepower

Either powertrain can be paired with front or all-wheel drive. The Sportage rides on a new platform with a longer wheelbase which is supposed to help provide better driving dynamics as well as reduce noise and vibration. The introduction of tough-looking trim like the X-Line gives the compact ute an off-road vibe, but the X-Pro actually has gear to help tackle the tough stuff. It rolls on 17-inch black rims and all-terrain tires, and offers a selection of drive modes.

Real-world fuel economy and MPG Kia hasn't said how fuel-efficient the 2023 Sportage will be, but obviously the hybrid should be the most efficient.

Inside, the Sportage looks to make a good impression with a sleek design highlighted by a huge digital display on the dash and other eye-catching details. The images we've seen show an attractive two-tone color scheme, and the shape of the air vents on the dashboard are particularly distinct. The center console has a rotating gear knob, start button and myriad other controls that blend into the piano black bezel.

Thanks to larger overall dimensions as well as a longer wheelbase, the Sportage has more rear legroom and 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat. There's also a two-level load floor for even more versatility.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Infotainment and Connectivity

Infotainment-wise, the Sportage comes standard with desirable features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition to a large 12.3-inch dashboard, there is a 12.3-inch touchscreen available which together form a transparent display on the dashboard. There are also neat touch controls under the infotainment interface that alternate between the climate control system and the stereo. An upgraded Harman/Kardon unit is available along with a wireless phone charger and subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety and driving assistance functions

driving assistance functions

The new Sportage will be offered with a variety of standard and optional driver assistance technologies. The list includes everything from navigation-based adaptive cruise control and a remote park feature that's essentially the same as Hyundai's Smart Park system.

  • Standard forward collision warning and automated emergency braking.
  • Lane departure warning and lane keeping assist as standard.
  • Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert available.
  • Warranty and Service Coverage

Kia offers one of the best warranty plans on the market, with the longest powertrain warranty in the industry. However, it lacks the free maintenance of competitors such as Toyota and even its corporate sibling, Hyundai.

  • The limited warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles.
  • The powertrain warranty covers 10 years or 100,000 miles.
  • No free scheduled maintenance.
